More about our director, Jill Salvino...

In 2020 Jill released her feature documentary Between The Shades. The concept was to put faces to the letters that make up LGBTQI and show just how those letters have evolved. By examining the immense power of labels, what transpires is the clear transcendence of love.
Jill invited fifty people, each with a connection to the LGBTQI community, to begin the conversation by sharing their stories. The 82 minutes of collective dialog is a beautiful display of diversity and evidence of the need to be who one is.
"No film can ever capture the immense diversity of the LGBTQI community, but it didn’t stop us from trying." Jill Salvino.
Between the Shades features many voices, representing a large range of age groups, ethnicities and professions. Among them are Beth Malone (of Broadway’s Fun Home), actress Kathy Najimy and former Democratic National Committee Treasurer Andrew Tobias. What binds them all, however, is a connection to being somewhere within the increasingly nebulous cloud that is the LGBTQI community. Each person speaks positively and eloquently even if their individual journeys to that point were not all easy or straightforward.
"Suggests that human sexuality is far more nuanced than labels or even a linear scale can capture... It's a conversation that feels right for the times in which we live." New York Times
Aside from being found on many streaming platforms, the film is also in over 600 colleges, high schools and universities across the United States. So, its use as a teaching tool and conversation starter, is equally important as a documentary feature streamed at home.
"The speakers are engaged, passionate, proud of who they are and the journeys they have made – and the honesty of their truth-telling, coupled with the director’s skilled shaping of their group narrative, keeps our interest riveted throughout." Los Angeles Blade
